Dilation & Extraction (D & X): This abortion procedure is also known as “Partial Birth Abortion” due to the fact that it is an abortion procedure that actually requires that you give birth. The procedure takes three days for the abortionist to perform. On the first day Laminaria (thin rods made out of a type of seaweed that expands when it is moist) are inserted into the cervix. As the Laminaria swell they force the cervix to dilate. The second day these Laminaria are replace with fresh Laminaria in greater numbers to cause the cervix to dilate even further. On day three the membranes are ruptured and the abortionist will use an ultrasound to locate your baby’s lower extremities. The abortionist then uses large forceps to grab onto one or both of the baby’s legs so that he can be pulled down through the birth canal and into the vagina. The baby’s body is then delivered, except for the baby’s head, which remains lodged in the cervical opening. The abortionist then inserts scissors and makes an incision in the base of the baby’s skull. A suction catheter is then inserted to evacuate the baby’s cranium. The skull is then crushed for easier removal using large forceps and the baby is delivered the rest of the way and then followed by delivery of your placenta.
NOTE: Pregnancy Help Center does not provide, recommend or refer for late term abortions.
