Human Papilloma Virus: (HPV): causes genital warts that can spread rapidly. These warts in turn are one of the leading causes of genital cancers in both males and females. They are the number one cause of cancer of the cervix in young women and the number one cause of cancer of the penis in men. Causes painful intercourse. This disease is spreading so rapidly that it is now more common than genital herpes.
Genital Herpes: Don’t be fooled by commercials that make light of this incurable disease. It is a recurrent disease that causes painful outbreaks of genital blisters and it can be and is frequently spread in the absence of sores. One in Five Americans over the age of twelve is infected with this virus. Statistics are higher in the African American community with infection rates approaching 50% of those who are sexually active. It has increased 500% among white teens in the last decade.
Hepatitis B: This disease is 10 times more infectious than HIV. One main concern is how many carriers have absolutely no symptoms of the disease, hence the rapid spread. It is a common cause of liver cancer.
HIV/AIDS: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) can be spread from person to person even before it is detected. While we are learning more about the treatment of HIV it remains incurable. It nearly always leads to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) which in turn is always fatal over time. First identified in the United States in the 1980’s it is fast becoming one of the leading causes of death in young people between the ages of 24 to 35.
